How The Gospel of the Kingdom came to be
It all began with a puzzle: how to fit Jesus’ teaching together with the gospel I had learned mostly from Paul and John. I got the chance to study at Cambridge University and in 1974 needed to nominate a PhD research topic. I suggested, “What was Jesus’ gospel?” They knocked that back, because someone else was working on the same subject. I finished up looking at Jesus’ teaching on wealth and poverty, and in the midst of it began to find answers to my original question.
Three years reading into the historical background to Jesus’ life left me wanting to think more about his earthly ministry. The chance came and in 1985-6 I spent time in India (Union Biblical Seminary in Pune), Germany (Tübingen University), England (Tyndale House in Cambridge) and Israel writing The King of God’s Kingdom. But there was much more to learn about Jesus’ gospel and how it fitted with the Old Testament and with Paul and the later New Testament writings, and with Christianity today.
The trigger was an invitation to speak at a conference in 1990 on “What is the Gospel?” Sabbaticals followed and now at last the book is complete. I was particularly thrilled by what I dug up about gospels in the ancient world – discovering that “gospel” was not a religious term, but an institution deeply imbedded in ancient secular culture, with a reach into today. Jesus’ gospel was an extraordinary announcement which inaugurated the kingdom of God and brought about a change in cosmic and world history. When the gospel is heard and believed today a person is welcomed into that kingdom which is growing to inherit the universe.
